Yes Virginia you can upgrade XP to Win 7

I went into Staples to pickup some items and decided to test their Easytech reps on Win 7. He tried to upsell me on the retail version of Win 7 (which costs more), stating that XP cannot be upgraded. Not true, per Microsoft. I even told him that I knew you couldn’t upgrade, but you can use the upgrade version with XP. He disagreed and told me he went to the “training course.”  So don’t listen to Staples and save yourself $75 on the upgrade cost.

iPhone vs. Blackberry

Author: jamesgarveyCategory: Audio, Blackberry, email, iPhone, WindowsComments: No Comments

I’ve had a chance to use my iPhone for almost 2 months now and here’s the good/bad.
1. keyboarding – Apple’s auto-correct allows me to type faster, but Blackberry keyboards are great (much better than Palm Pre)
2. more clicks – I miss the Blackberry menu > switch application functionality. home > app > home > back to other app.
3. Internet – the iPhone has replaced 50% of my laptop usage.  Pinch to zoom and landscape mode are key.
4. music/video – the player is just easier to use on the iPhone, and syncing is better.

You might as well buy a new PC

Microsoft recently published a Windows 7 upgrade chart for Walt Mossberg of the WSJ. As you can see, there’s no easy upgrade for Windows XP. I have 3 recommendations:
1. Run Windows Vista system checker to see if your desktop/laptop is upgradeable to Vista.
2. (if Yes to question 1), buy a Vista upgrade disc now with a free upgrade to Windows 7.  You can upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7.
3. (If no to 1). Buy a new PC.  Reimage and sell your PC on ebay or craigslist.

iPhone 1602 error with iTunes 8.2.1, 3G iphone

I was helping a customer update their iPhone to the 3.0 software and it bricked (would no longer boot up). I resolved the issue by installing an old version of iTunes (8.1.10), updating the iPhone to 2.2.1 OS, upgrading iTunes to 8.2.0 and then installing the update. There must be a bug in 8.2.1 that causes this issue, because I replicated it on two other Macs, a Vista install and an XP install.

Thanks to Old Apps for hosting older versions of iTunes. That really helped out.

New iPhone 3G "S" due out June 19th

Just in time for Father’s day.  There are now 3 versions (3G 8GB, 3Gs 16GB and 3Gs 32GB).  Reportedly 2x faster, 3MP autofocus camera with video recording (and EDITING on the fly), built in compass and of course more storage space for all those new apps.  They say there’s better battery life but the OLED screen didn’t make its way into this model.

32GB iPhone coming in June…

Author: jamesgarveyCategory: iPhoneComments: No Comments

CNET reports that Apple is starting production this month on 2 new iPhones, a 32GB iPhone and a lower end iPhone (targeted for fast growing markets like Russia, Brazil, India and China).  These phones are targeted for the “iPhone” June release.  Note the new matte casing pic (from Macrumors.com).
